Kurt Vile Smoke Ring For My Halo (Matador)

Une voix de petit branleur qui arrive malgré tout (ou justement ?) à évoquer à la fois la défiance d'un Bob Dylan, la coolitude d'un Lou Reed et la mélancolie d'un Neil Young, un sens de la formule ("My best friends are long gone but I've got runner ups"), des chansons irrésistibles (On Tour, Baby's Arms, Runner Ups, On Tour, Society Is My Friend, ON TOUR) et d'autres un peu plus anecdotiques (Jesus Fever) voire irritantes (Peeping Tomboy) qui n'empêchent pas le blues/folk enfumé et hagard de cet album de tourner en boucle depuis des jours, que ce soit à la maison ou en voiture.

Si vous avez toujours voulu savoir ce que ça donnerait de mettre Eddie Vedder à la tête d'un groupe de doom metal, 40 Watt Sun a la réponse. Bon en réalité il s'agit du nouveau groupe de Patrick Walker, ex-chanteur et guitariste des cultes Anglais de Warning. C'est lent, sombre, introspectif, mais plutôt mélodique et finalement pas déprimant pour un penny.

Top albums février 2011

J'ai finalement décidé de mettre des notes, non pas parce que je me considère comme un professeur du bon goût désignant les bons et les mauvais élèves de la musique, mais plutôt parce qu'elles permettent de relativiser le classement et de gagner du temps (ce même temps que je suis en train de perdre à expliquer pourquoi je les ai mises). Par exemple, malgré le nombre de bons voire très bons albums écoutés ce mois-ci, on constate qu'il n'y a pas véritablement de coup de coeur, du genre de ceux qui me donnent immédiatement envie de casser ma tirelire que je n'ai pas, comme ce fut le cas en janvier avec Humbling Tides, Lost Chords et Blackout. Le mois prochain fera mieux, il l'a promis.

Records for Relief - De la musique pour aider le Japon

Pendant tout le mois de mars, les labels 12k et Experimedia (ainsi que certains labels distribués tels que Dead Pilot ou Home Normal) reverseront le montant des achats effectués sur leur site à un fonds de soutien aux sinistrés japonais créé par l'organisation américaine Japan Society. Ces labels réputés chez les amateurs d'ambient et autres musiques expérimentales abritent des artistes tels Machinefabriek, Alva Noto, William Basinski, Celer, Stephan Mathieu, Library Tapes, et bien d'autres...

Une initiative également reprise par Hibernate Recordings dont toutes les ventes de CD jusqu'au 28 du mois iront directement à la fondation Save The Children, tout comme le label électro Audiobulb.

Stranded Horse - Humbling Tides (2011)

Avec l'envoûtant Churning Strides paru en 2007 sur le label Talitres, Yann Tambour déposait l'Encre sur les côtes africaines et empoignait la kora pour nous montrer une toute nouvelle facette de son talent. Humbling Tides, son deuxième album sous cette nouvelle identité (amputée de son Thee initial), poursuit dans cette veine de folk intimiste et contemplative à la beauté renversante.

Comme ces marées auxquelles le titre du disque fait référence, la musique de Stranded Horse semble avancer et repartir en arrière, avant de recommencer inlassablement, sans pour autant que l'ennui ne pointe son nez. Moins hypnotique et frénétique peut-être que pouvait l'être son prédécesseur, Humbling Tides n'en est pas moins captivant et voit Yann enrichir la palette de son univers de nouvelles teintes, à l'image de ce violon et ce violoncelle qui font leur apparition, ou de cette reprise des Smiths, "What Difference Does It Make" (après le "Misty Mist" de T. Rex présent sur Churning Strides).

L'année 2011 ne pouvait pas mieux commencer.

Ceux qui ont été atteints par le virus connaissent bien le problème. On attend un album avec excitation, on le déniche un bon mois avant sa sortie officielle, on l'écoute une fois, deux peut-être, et puis déçu ou emballé on passe au suivant parce que la liste des choses à écouter s'allonge de jour en jour et que ces listes de fin d'année ne vont pas s'écrire toutes seules. Pour cet album, la légère déception était de mise après ce petit rituel. Tant pis. Il y a tellement d'autres albums à écouter. Et puis je me suis retrouvé bien malgré moi restreint à une poignée d'albums, dont celui-ci. Et cette fois, au fil des écoutes, le charme opère. Cette voix, cette guitare, je me souviens des raisons de mon impatience.

Quelques jours plus tard. Retour à la normale. Je récupère mon disque dur. Mes centaines d'albums à écouter. L'embarras du choix. Sauf que le seul que j'ai envie d'écouter, c'est celui-ci.
